Sub Binder with Bonus FREEBIE!!!

This is the sub binder that I use in my classroom for substitutes.

It outlines my procedures in class and lesson plans for use. I keep it right on the counter by the door so anyone who walks in will see it.

I keep my sub packet in a binder. In the binder I keep the dividers in clear page protectors with the information behind the dividers.

Behind the Time Fillers tab is where I keep extra copies of skills we've been working on and fun stuff like word searches or ABC order games. 

I print out the sub lesson plan and make enough copies for my class. I put the lesson plans behind the correct divider. I also use pocket dividers to put the copies in. I make sure that the sub plans I include are complete mini units for the day. I keep a separate “sub tub” (a small Rubbermaid box) with an extra copy of the trade books that my sub lessons are based on and any literacy centers of other games/items that might be needed.
In the front of the binder I use a binder zipper pouch to keep absentee slips, office slips, pens, stickers, etc. anything that might be of use to the sub during the day.

MARDI GRAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And a Math Activity :)

Yessiree, it is that time of year!!!! Mardi Gras!! I LOVE this season. Everything is purple, gold, and green. Everyone is prepping for parades and balls and eating King Cake and it's just great!! I am so excited for my Krewe's ball coming up on February 8th. 


My guests are my friends Jessica and Mike and Anna. Of course sharing the table with my BFF Amanda and her guests Jolie, Snooks, and Raven. I might be missing some peoples, but with this lineup we are gonna have a BLAST!!! The theme is Circus!!!!!!!!!!!


This is my 7th year in my Krewe and my 3rd year dressing up in costume rather than gown. My costume is:

And I made this little Mardi Gras Activity myself as well. It's about place value to the 100s. 




Students match the feathers to the numbers on the mask. I've included 28 sets of feathers and masks. Students look at the number on the mask and match it with the feathers in expanded form. 

E.g. 235=200+30+5

I've also included a template for a mask craft using the same idea - make a mask and feathers of a chosen number in expanded form. Children can choose a number and color the feathers how they wish. I've also attached a blank feather and mask page for you to design your own numbers. There is a page for creating 4 digit numbers and a blank page of four feathers. This is a great little activity for reinforcing the skill of place value.

Wicked Wizard Weather!!

This is a fun mini unit with a Wizard of Oz theme!! It is designed as a mini ELA/Science unit to support learning about different types of weather. 

We started off reading this book: 


This is a perfect book for introducing weather. It's got great pictures and easy to understand explanations. I also created it to introduce our unit on nonfiction. We started out by making an anchor chart of fiction and nonfiction text features. 


I introduced some weather words and we brainstormed some more. 
The activities are differentiated for different levels of learning. 

This unit includes: 
Anchor chart: Nonfiction/Fiction Text Features
Pictures for anchor chart
Features of fiction/nonfiction text center activity: picture cards, picture/word cards, word cards with differentiated process sheets
Suggestions for lessons
Vocabulary match game (pictures with words, words, and fill in the blank sentences) with process sheets
Vocabulary Sentences game (with pictures and without)
Writing activity
Word search activity
Wizard Weather Book

The added bonus is that this is Wizard of Oz themed!!! I'm getting a head start on my classroom theme for next year!

The Daily CAFE

So at my school we are all getting on board with the Daily Cafe by the Two Sister, Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. If you don't know about this, check it out because it's great! It's a way of running your reading workshop/guided reading groups/daily reading block. Here's a breakdown: The focus is working on specific strategies to cater to your students' reading needs. You confer with individual students to determine what they need to work on and that's what you teach in small groups. The best part is the data collection binder. They call it their Pensieve (Yes LIKE Harry Potter!!). The Pensieve has a calendar, tracking forms, conferring forms, and dividers for each student. You can even make it your own by using whatever methods work best for you!

So that's a very rough explanation - it is a little more involved than that but you'll have to read the book. I"m excited to implement this in my classroom!
